What to stream this month

Whether you're pulling a Cher Horowitz by sending yourself chocolates and flowers, or cozying up with your significant other, the season of love is here! There are usually two types of people around this time: Those who are looking to soak in the romance, and those who despise the sentiments all together. Allow me to play as your film cupid regardless. No matter your feelings on the impending date, I’m here to cover all possible moods with some corresponding film recommendations, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Sylvie’s Love (2020) | Amazon Prime Video

What to stream this month

Though already engaged, Sylvie (Tessa Thompson) has a summer fling with an aspiring musician named Robert (Nnamdi Asomugha). Their connection is undeniable and despite wanting to be together, the two go their separate ways. Years later, they find themselves reconnecting, picking up right where they left off. Full of glamour and romance, Sylvie’s Love feels like an old Hollywood classic, with an absolutely dreamy soundtrack to match. It’ll take you on a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, but you can’t help but fall in love with its dynamic on-screen couple.

Also, if you’re one of the many fans of Bridgerton, you can catch the Duke of Hastings, aka Regé-Jean Page, in a supporting role in this film.

Promising Young Woman (2020) | On Demand

If you’re looking for more of an anti-Valentine’s Day story, Promising Young Woman will fit the bill. It follows Carey Mulligan’s character Cassie who after a severe trauma, tricks men into believing she’s extremely drunk. When they bring her home and begin to take advantage of her, she teaches them a little lesson. The film is an exhilarating revenge thriller that takes the concept to new heights. It’s a somewhat polarizing film, but it is definitely one of my favorites of the year and very much worth the price to rent, but its worth considering over others when you are looking to decide what to stream this month.

Little Fish (2021) | On Demand - February 5

When a virus which causes memory loss takes its toll on the population, a young married couple try to hold onto whatever they can. Starring Olivia Cooke and Jack O'Connell, Little Fish is a timely film, strangely enough, as it deals with a global crisis, but the love story at its core is the part that keeps you enthralled. There is something so beautiful and heartbreaking about a lost love, but it’s even more emotional when it’s happening right in front of you; a theme we’ll revisit in another film on this list. If you can handle watching something that takes place during an outbreak, this is one to look out for when you are looking for what to stream this month.

Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar (2021) | On Demand - February 12

We can’t forget about Galentine’s Day, which usually takes place on February 13th, and this film is perfect for it and when you are deciding what to stream this month. The hilarious Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo star in this comedy about two besties who decide to leave their small town and vacation in Florida. Naturally hijinks ensue, which hopefully means some quality laughs for us viewers. After seeing its initial release date delayed from last summer, the film couldn’t have come out at a better time. Expect to see a few familiar faces as well, including some other Saturday Night Live alums.

Supernova (2021) | On Demand - February 16

Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci star in this drama, as longtime partners facing the sad reality that they haven’t much time left with each other. As one deals with the effects of early onset dementia, the other is hurting at the idea of mourning his love before he’s even fully gone. Much like the above mentioned Little Fish, it explores lost love while it’s right in front of you. It’s a sentimental film and one that will certainly leave you feeling all sorts of emotions. With two wonderful performances, Supernova is one of the greats of the year already. So there you go! Now you know what to stream this month!
